Impressionism

Did you know that most of the art you see is actually impressionism? The reason is that people want things to be realistic  and impressionism is quite realistic. All it is is a product of a positivist thinking as evidenced by the examination of light. impressionism is the most realistic form of art in the world.

The beginnings of this form of art is a bit complex. During the middle of the nineteenth century, académie des beaux-artswas the main form of art in france. These pieces were displayed in a show called the Salon de Paris. In 1863, Manet, a famous impressionist submitted a piece of art called The Luncheon the Grass. However the judges rejected the painting because it was a realistic nude painting in a contemporary setting. After seeing the rejected piece, Emperor Nepolean III decreed that the public was allowed to judge the artwork, called the Salon de refuses or salon of the refused. Later on, the Salon of the Refused became the expedition of the impressionists.

There are quite a few techniques used in impressionism. For example, to emphasize the essence of an object, the artist uses light strokes. Also the artists try to prevent mixing the colors by painting side by side the colors to create a vibrant surface. Impressionists prevent themselves from using gray tones and black but use contemporary colors to create that effect instead

There are only a few impressionists. The most famous of the impressionists is Claude Monet. Mary Cassatt was born American but participated in 4 impressionist expiditions. Others include Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Impressionism wasn't accepted in its beginnings, but now it is well repsected now. Let us respect it for here on out. Impressionism is an amazing and innovative form of art.

  1. To my understanding, impressionism wasn't the most realistic form of art,nor the least realistic. they were rejected because they didn't paint within the three themes of classic art:Portrait, Religious and Political, and/or they painted quickly and there were many visible brush strokes which was unacceptable at the time. Emperor Nepolean didn't create the salon of the refused, the impressionists made it themselves. (at least, that's what I learned in art history.)
